Ring in the New Year with the TikTok Viral Candied Cranberries

The most addictive recipe I’ve made all year!

There’s a new holiday recipe that’s taken over Tiktok this holiday season: Candied Cranberries. It’s 3 ingredients, super simple to make and insanely delicious. Bonus is that they look super cute and festive too.

The recipe was coined by the account @cookiterica and the video gained over 700k likes with what felt like everyone trying it out. Warning: the online discourse on this tart treat has been hotly debated. Some say they taste like soap and others (like me) eat the whole container in one sitting. Try it out for yourself and let me know what you think!

How to Make the TikTok Viral Candied Cranberries

INGREDIENTS:

  • Fresh Cranberries

  • Icing Sugar

  • Liquid of your choice (sprite, prosecco, orange juice, etc)

THE STEP-BY-STEP:

  1. Pop your cranberries into a strainer and give them a good rinse. Pick out all the sad or mushy cranberries. You do NOT want to bite into one accidentally. It’s traumatic.

  2. Pour your clean cranberries into a large bowl and soak in liquid of choosing. The original recipe uses Prosecco and orange juice but Sprite is a popular choice too. I went with what I had on hand which was some passion fruit juice.

  3. Soak in liquid for 12 - 24 hours.

  4. Strain well, shaking to remove excess liquid and place into a Ziploc or covered container.

  5. Pour in generous amount of powdered sugar, close bag/container and SHAKE! Make sure each cranberry is well coated in sugar.

  6. Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees F. Place cranberries on baking tray and bake for 5-7 minutes.

  7. Remove and set aside to chill. Once cooled, place in the refrigerator. Best enjoyed once they are nice and cold. Enjoy!

Helpful Tips for making The Candied Cranberries:

  • Really make sure to get that excess liquid off. Too much liquid makes the sugar difficult to coat.

  • Not sure what liquid to use? Some say it doesn’t really matter. I think the key is just wetting the berries so that the sugar can stick. Some people online have used water with success. Don’t stress out and just use what you have on hand.

  • The soaking part of this recipe is also controversial with many arguing that cranberries aren’t porous so they aren’t really absorbing any flavour with the juice. I soaked mine for a few hours and that worked great.

  • I managed to get a batch that really “popped” (see TikTok below) but my others didn’t. I haven’t quite figured out what makes them pop but they all were delicious

Final Thoughts: These will be a staple for me every holiday season. I loved that they were so easy and a relatively healthy treat. I just need to learn how to not eat the entire bag in 24 hours. Oops!
